Normally, an amnesty happens only when the accused have served some of their sentences, or shown repentance through a public confession. For the UDD to demand [an amnesty] or threaten for such a thing is uncalled for.
Worse, all the UDD leaders have reaped political rewards as a result of the 2009-2010 political turmoil – during which buildings were torched and killings occurred – while the people whom they agitated and misled are suffering in jail. One of these instigators even landed a ministerial post in the government.
The big questions are:
How can the whole country be sure such dirty political ploys will never be used again?
Is the UDD’s demand complying with democratic principles, or just a tyranny of the majority?
