Time for the Ocean

A new dive watch pays tribute |to the sea and |the creatures |that live in it

Swiss luxury watchmaker Omega recently launched the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet, an innovative wristwatch that serves as a tribute to the GoodPlanet Foundation and the positive work it does for environment and underwater ecosystems.
From the development of the first true dive watch in 1932 to its sponsorship of GoodPlanet environmental film “Planet Ocean” which will be launched at the Rio+20 Summit, Omega’s connection to the ocean is deeply-rooted.
Omega and GoodPlanet formed their partnership in 2011, aiming to raise awareness of the dangers the oceans face and the importance of preserving and appreciating the beauty of the natural resources.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of the timepiece will be committed to fully funding a project to preserve the mangroves and seagrasses in Southeast Asia and educating the local population about the conservation of the ocean.
TheOmega Seamaster is an automatic winding chronometer and quartz watch produced by Omega since 1947. Omega Seamaster wooed the world from 007’s wrist, where it has appeared from “GoldenEye” in 1995 to last year’s “Skyfall”.
The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet features a bold blue lacquered dial with applied indexes. The polished and facetted rhodium-plated hour and seconds hands and aluminium-fashioned GMT hand are coated with white Super-LumiNova, which emits a blue light. The rhodium-plated minute hand is also coated with Super-LumiNova but emits a green light, as does the dot on the diving bezel.
There is also a date window at the 3 o’clock position. A domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal – enhanced with anti-reflective treatment on both sides – protects the dial from damage above and below the water’s surface.
For the frequent traveller who enjoys taking in the beauty of the world underwater first hand, the bright orange GMT scale on the bezel ring and central GMT
hand make it possible to track two separate time zones.
The lacquered orange 24-hour scale stands out on the bi-directional polished blue bezel ring, a feature which complements the helium-escape valve located at 10 o’clock on the brushed and polished 43.5 mm stainless steel case. The case back, engraved with “GoodPlanet Foundation”, also features a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, making it possible to see Omega’s revolutionary technology within.
Inspired by the diverse and captivating colours of the ocean, this timepiece is available with a classic stainless steel bracelet, or a sporty blue rubber strap. This model was designed with extreme adventurers in mind and is water resistant to 60 bar (600 metres/2,000 feet).
At its heart is the exclusive Omega Co-Axial calibre 8605, a self-winding movement with a three-level Co-Axial escapement and Si14 silicon balance spring. This remarkable timepiece performs with such reliability and accuracy that it is offered with a full four-year warranty.
The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet is presented in a unique box made of natural bamboo wood, a tribute to the rewarding partnership Omega and the GoodPlanet Foundation have formed and the organisation’s achievements in environmental conservation.
