Punitive tax on single people unacceptable

Re: "Heavier taxes on singles not on agenda: Pheu Thai", September 7.

The proposal to levy taxes on single people, forcing them into marriage, is unacceptable. It is the individual’s right to choose to be single, or even celibate.
Although the low birth rate is a concern, would the population grow by forcing them, via the levying of taxes, to get married and have children?
If such a tax were levied, some singles would get married and have children despite being unprepared for either. If they became parents are were unable and unready to raise children, there would be no guarantee that the children would grow up in a quality environment and get a decent education so they could contribute to the economy and compensate for the shortage of labour in the future. Let singles be free.
