I believe the Asian FIVB and AVC official was too kind to Korat’s organisation. There were two major flaws. First, the ticket sales were chaotic (but gave an opportunity to teach locals the logic of queuing). Second, using the stadium’s central sound system to drum up support for Thais was unfair to the opponent, Japan, especially at the crucial moments when it screamed even louder while both sides were fighting for points.
As a recent armchair follower of Thailand’s women’s volleyball team, I was surprised that the sport turned out to be a greater thrill than football or golf. Every shot in the game is blood and toil on the part of each player. Wit, alertness and strategy are essential. Its swiftness is so breathtaking that it may not be suitable for Thai supporters with heart problems.
