Presumably his visit was part of a campaign to gain support among expatriate Thais and groom his public profile. According to the leader of the Norwegian Buddhist Federation, Thaksin was welcomed at Wat Thai and well taken care of by the Thais there, most of whom hail from his power base, Isaan. As is so often the case, foreign journalists don’t get it with Thaksin. They report he is in exile, when he is actually in self-imposed exile. The perception around the world of what’s going on in Thailand often seems wrong. They do not get that he is a criminal on the run, with court trials waiting for him in Thailand. Aftenposten’s headline on Wednesday was “Banished Thai leader seeking support in Norway before heading home”.
