The news has warmed my heart nicely this Christmas. It is the reverse of Eliza Doolittle, the Cockney flower girl in “My Fair Lady” trained by Prof Higgins to be a lady. In contrast, Chitpas Bhirombhakdi is a well-educated (over-educated, some claim) lady who has swapped privilege for the rough-and-tumble world of politics.
Adding beauty is that her father has a different political view and has supported the Singha heiress’ cherished wish by freeing her from the Bhirombhakdi name. That is exactly what Voltaire would have said: Despite disapproving of what you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it.
If I were the founder of this great family, I would feel immensely proud of both father and mother for understanding their daughter’s wish, instead of asking that she stay home amid the trappings of ladylike privilege.
