Up-and-coming designers are constantly making their mark in the fast-paced world of fashion and this week Thailand enjoyed a taste of what’s in store for the future as 34 students from the Chanapatana International Design Institute (CIDI) presented 51 creative designs in its Art Thesis Exhibition 2014.
This year’s exhibition on the theme “Back to the Future” showcased thesis projects in the fashion and interior and product design categories, all of them created by students who will graduate this year.
One of the highlights was Hataikan Kaewbua’s “Queen of Nile” collection, which offered luxurious evening gowns made from Thai silk and decorated with peacock feathers. Equally stunning was Kanoknan Wutipong’s “The Fossil Still Alive” collection, featuring re-structured synthetic leather combined with elegant silks.
Another fascinating collection, “The Butterfly Effect” by Kanyawee Dejtawinsit, was just like this colourful creature with a body padded in orange, blue and red and transparent wings.
Thanapob Yuwijit presented “Time Travelling Back and Forth” collection, which underlined a woman’s sex appeal in metallic silver and pink. Kanyakorn Kunakorn’s Mutation’s Nation collection, meanwhile, looked to both past and future by adapting military camouflage for her futuristic costumes.
CIDI, a non-profit organisation that offers an international curriculum taught by experienced European professors, was established in 2000 to elevate the standard of Thai designers and products. The institute embraces various ideas to allow each student to achieve his or her own best and to become a new professional in the design industry. Upon finishing the curriculum, their thesis projects are presented to the public in an annual event that shows the best designs by the students.
CIDI’s goal is to produce young designers who can compete internationally. The institute is currently working to elevate the standards of the Asean market so that it can compete with other countries around the world. Past CIDI’s students have brought fame to the institute by winning top prizes in HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Phufa Product Design Competition, Echi di Luce 03 in Italy for lamp design, WOW Award (World of Wearable Art) in New Zealand, Gruppo Sintesi’s Shaping up Intelligence in Italy, and Banao Clothing’s Children Fashion Design Contest in Canada.
Fast forward
