The news that Nation University has modified the Ice Bucket Challenge into the Holy Water Challenge is a welcome boost for charity and an auspicious start for first-year students. Perhaps the holy-water challenge could be adopted as part of the welcoming ceremony so as to bolster unity in the student body. This would make a pleasant change from the threats, extortion and acts of violence that greet first-year students at many other institutions.
Teachers play the role of second parents to their students and should not be passive while their new charges face attacks such as the one reported yesterday (“Tech college pupil did not die of injuries”, National, September 2). All parents hope and expect their children to experience a safe and fun freshman orientation, not a dangerous hazing.
