The abrupt end of Bodyslam’s “Dharmajati” concert tour has only upset the band’s fans but also frontman Artiwara “Toon” Khongmalai. At what ended up being the tour’s finale in Korat, fans were moved to tears and Toon was too.
Tour promoter Gay Ray announced the cancellations of the remaining 21 concerts. Korat, was the ninth stop on the tour.
Gay Ray boss Yuthana “Pa Ted” Boonorm said that the decision was been thought through thoroughly. “We had a meeting with the band and agreed that it is best we stopped it,” he said.
The tour had the ambition of bringing arena-style rock to the masses outside Bangkok, but it was a money-losing proposition. Had it continued, it would have cost the company Bt60 million. “Even though we’ve stopped now, we still lose Bt20 million,” says Pa Ted.
For his part, Toon understands the reasons for ending the tour but he’s still emotional about it. After the Korat concert, he took to Instagram to reveal his feelings, and that, actually, it’s beyond his wildest dreams that the band has come this far. “Without everyone, there wouldn’t be Bodyslam,” he wrote.
Offering support to Toon during these trying times was his girlfriend, actress Ratachawin “Goi” Wongviriya, who said that she knew her boyfriend was under a lot of stress over the concert’s abortive ending. “I couldn’t do much else but support him,” she was quoted as saying in media reports.
Yet Goi says Toon has not let despair go to his head, and he is full of spirit. “If there is a chance there could be a concert tomorrow, he is ready to perform,” she said.
Goi also dismissed rumours that the failed tour means the end of Bodyslam. “It is absolutely not the end. It is just the beginning. I know that there are so many people who want to see his live performance,” she said.
Toon has said that regardless of the number of fans, he would give 100 per cent to his performance on stage.
Goi said the outpouring of support for the band shows how much Bodyslam is loved.
“There is support from the left and the right and during hard times. We can see that how much we are loved,” said. “It is just a break not the end of the band,” she insisted.
