Tomorrow's talent today

Two well-known artists join the judging committee of the fifth Asia Art Contest

WITH SUCH VETERAN artists as Preecha Thaothong and Thavorn Ko-udomvit among the judges and a total purse of more than Bt600,000, the year’s edition of the Asia Art Contest, the fifth, will almost certainly draw a wealth of talent from all over the country.
“We are proud to be a part of Thailand’s art circle that gives many new artists from around the country a stage to show off their abilities,” said Dr Kongkiat Opaswongkarn, chief executive of Asia Plus Group Holdings Securities, at a recent press conference to launch the competition.
“This year is definitely more interesting,” added Nintira Sophonpanich, the company’s executive director.
“We have the honour of welcoming two of Thailand’s master artists to our panel of judges, which is made up of Ithipol Thangchalok, Chalermchai Kositpipat and Somsak Raksuwan. The first is Preecha Thaothong, who was named a National Artist in Visual Art in 2009.
He is the most prominent artwork analyst in Thailand. The second is Thavorn Ko-udomvit, artist, gallery owner and associate professor at Silpakorn University. These five judges can only help strengthen this art contest. We believe that competition will be very intense.”
“This year’s concept is ‘Rhythm of Music, Poem and Art’ so we are expecting a diversity of artworks and think these will be more abstract than in previous years. We are looking for novelty and hope to see new techniques from this up-and-coming generation of artists,” Chalermchai said.
Despite its evolution, the contest maintains its original commitment to continuously provide a platform for the new artists and encourage them to create their artworks. It also supports the creative artworks that are the national culture heritage.
The winner will receive Bt200,000, the first runner-up Bt150,000 and the second runner-up Bt100,000. All three artists will be recognised with certificates, as well the three artists receiving honorary mention award, who also go home with Bt50,000.
