Putting aside the respective merits of a water canal versus a rail canal, I cannot understand people who oppose the Kra Isthmus Canal project on the basis that it would “split Thailand into two”.
Do they really think a canal would sever southern Thailand from the rest of the country? Perhaps they are frightened it might drift away into the Indian Ocean, never to be seen again.
Then again, perhaps that is not such a bad idea. At least it would solve the long-running problems in the deep South.
