Abhisit might think he is still young and has a long way to go in politics, but the Democrat Party he leads is on the verge of collapse at the moment.
The only way out for the Democrats now seems to be for Abhisit to resign as party chief, paving the way for the election of a new leader.
The outstanding candidate on the list is Korn Chatikavanij, who is also a close friend and confidante of Abhisit. Korn is the only potential contender to have worked for the party continuously over the past decade. He is well versed in the workings of the economy as well as being a brave and decisive leader. He would also is be a worthy political opponent for Thaksin Shinawatra.
Other potential candidates are former Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan, and former Unctad secretary-general Supachai Panitchpakdi. These two are distinguished individuals of international renown with outstanding records of leadership.
Abhisit should resign as Democrat Party leader now. He can make a comeback later, after the party has undergone reform and is ready for his leadership again. After all, he is still young.
