Happier times when no one lied

Among the letters published last week, we heard from Somsak Pola the appalling story of the boy who was promised citizenship and an education by then-prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Abhisit, just another politician seeking glory and self-aggrandisement,

This week, along comes Vint Chavala who, as our moral arbiter, is entitled to turn morality on its head. The nonsense that Abhisit “might” have broken the law had he kept his promise is preposterous.
Apparently it’s all right to fail to keep promises if Vint Chavala likes you, and he admits liking Abhisit. His reasons for this, he says, are that Abhisit did not drive a wedge between Thai citizens and did not seek personal wealth through corruption. It seems that Abhisit governed during some golden age when all Thais lived contentedly together, the elite happy to exploit the poor and the powerless poor happy to be exploited, and politicians were incorruptible.
So what did false promises matter in that just and equitable society where everyone knew their place and everyone was happy?
