MOST BANGKOK residents’ experience with the famed London department store Harrods is limited to luxury-priced tea and desserts, but there’s now a Harrods Cafe, where breakfast and brunch favourites share an intriguing British-Asian flair.
Spanning 300 square metres at the Mercury Ville on Langsuan Road, the bistro is splendid yet inviting in ivory white, deep green, subtle grey and the warm browns of wood.
This is the first branch in the world serving Harrods’ signature toast and the third that features a Harrods London Ice Cream Parlour.
An ideal spot to get away from the bustling street outside, the place has some delightful quick nibbles, like the various toasts made with homemade kraftkorn bread. We particularly love the Toast Carbonara with English Bacon (Bt195), which has rich, creamy sauce and slightly seared lean bacon.
While most sauce-coated bread gets soggy pretty quickly, krafkorn bread stays firm and crunchy longer, allowing you to slowly enjoy the toast without having it melt into porridge within 10 minutes.
Among the popular brunch items, Cafe Benedict Royale (Bt225) is served all day. A soft poached egg sits atop the airy and buttery puff pastry with smoked salmon and finger-licking-good Hollandaise sauce. This is a great dish to start a day no matter what time your day starts.
There’s also an array of pot pies made fresh daily to pick up over the counter. A must-try is the Lamb Stew Pot Pie (Bt195), which is rich, filling and delicious.
You can get more substantial dishes. The sizeable Fish and Chips (Bt295) entails a large chunk of codfish loin that’s coated in beer batter and deep-fried. The fish is well seasoned and not greasy at all, and quite filling.
Another famous dish from the old country, Bangers and Mash (Bt350), is also a good option if you’re really hungry. The tasty, herbaceous pork sausage is grilled and served with Harrods-recipe mashed potatoes and sweet-and-sour blueberry sauce, a lovely array of flavours.
The Asian- and Thai-style dishes are just as pleasing and kept pretty authentic. The Ka Prao Grilled Chicken (Bt175) tastes very Thai with lots of chilli, garlic and all the rest. Instead of a fried egg, though, you get a poached egg with runny yolk.
Stick around for dessert, especially the ice cream. Get yourself a well-deserved scoop of one of a dozen kinds of traditional gelato and sorbet flavours, available for both your table and takeaway.
There are two variants to the Harrods Soft Cream Float, each Bt195.
The Earl Grey Tea Float made with No 42 Earl Grey Royal Cream and Homemade Earl Grey Caviar is mild and creamy with the perfumed tea and robust caramel. Chocolate lovers will prefer the Chocolate Milk Float with English Milk Cream, a truly rich, decadent sauce.
And both of these come with a Harrods Teddy Bear Biscuit.
