The intention of America’s founding fathers in establishing the electoral college to decide the presidency was to ensure that the smaller states counterbalanced the large populous states. But that was centuries ago when the US was not a world power and its presidency was merely for America. The situation is now different, since the US is the global superpower and decisions made by its president have repercussions for the world community.
For the first 100 days of his tenure, Donald Trump has achieved nothing tangible, with notable failures including his travel ban and healthcare policy. A previous letter-writer to this column praised his administration for having more than 3,000 paedophiles arrested in Washington. However, a nation’s president is not the same as a city’s mayor. Trump has not even filled many of his administration portfolios yet – mainly because he prefers to hire people he can trust and who will obey him. Instead of draining the “Washington swamp”, he has filled it up with his millionaire cronies. His announcement last week that the US was pulling out of the Paris Accord came as no surprise, since his vision is focused on “the voters in Pittsburgh”. The US will now be recorded in history alongside Syria and Nicaragua as an international pariah that refused to sign the climate accord.
Germany’s Angela Merkel was absolutely correct in saying that the world cannot depend on the leadership of America anymore and that Europe and Asia have to fill the void. Under Trump, the US has become an irresponsible role model.
