Whenever I read a Thomas Turk letter a part of me says don’t dignify it by responding. But another part tells me I have a moral responsibility to set the record straight before someone is foolish enough to follow his advice and destroy their health.
His latest claim, that whole grains cause obesity, gives new meaning to the word insanity. I eat a gigantic hunk of whole-grain bread every day and not even my critics have ever called me obese.
A study by Loma Linda University, which was reported in the Huffington Post, found that vegans – who generally eat plenty of whole grains – are more than three times less likely to be obese than meat-eaters. John Robbins in his book “The Food Revolution” says meat-eaters are nine times more likely to be obese.
Because Turk can not intelligently dispute the numerous studies showing the benefits of plant-based diets, he resorts to vicious tirades against virtually all medical doctors, nutritionists and dieticians and accuses them of being corrupt. Turk is always questioning everyone else’s motives; maybe it’s time everyone else started questioning his.
