Unity in late King’s portraits
Artist and art lecturer Thavorn Ko-udomvit will pay homage to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Aduyadej in the exhibition “Prostration” at his own Ardel Gallery of Modern Art on Thonburi’s Boromrachachonnanee Road from July 4 through August 6. Thavorn has created abstract and semi-abstract imagery in silkscreen and gold leaf on silhouette portraits of the beloved monarch by Prateep Kochabua, Suradej Kaewthamai, Nitikorn Kraivixien and Watchara Klakhakhai. The results signify the unity of Thais in their gratitude to the King. Learn more at www.ArdelGallery.com.

Out&About Art from other lands
The Israeli and Mexican embassies are hosting separate art shows – “Outside Looking In” and “Geographies” – at the National Gallery on Bangkok’s Chao Fah Road from July 5 through 30. Israel’s Maya Gelfman will display paintings and installations, the bold and colourful results of intense meditative rituals. “Geographies” will have the work of Mexicans Betsabee Romero, Alfredo de Stefano, Maria Jose de la Macorra and Enrique Rosas.

Out&About Rare early photographs
Bangkok’s Kathmandu Photography Gallery will on July 8 open an exhibition of photographs by Thai pioneer Rabil Bunnag (1902-99). They include atmospheric images taken in 1953 of ancient Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet, with Buddha statues and pagodas overgrown with creepers in a play of light and shadow. The revered Buddhadasa Bhikku noted the acute contrast between the pre-restoration photos of the sites and the way they came to look. Rabil donated 100 pictures to Buddhadasa’s Suan Mokkh Monastery in Surat Thani. Find out more at www.KathmanduPhotoBkk.com.
