Gun-law hysteria a slur on US Founding Fathers

Re: “No gun should be sold without a gun-licence check”, Have Your Say, November 10.

This is nothing more than an empty statement; quite meaningless. A gun licence is a piece of paper. The important question is: what are the essential criteria to qualify for a gun licence?
Would it not be fundamental to prove soundness of mind, to prove a track record free from irrational behaviour and mental instability?
A gun is perfectly harmless hiding away in a cupboard. It is equally harmless in the hands of a person who is mentally stable, sound of mind and rational.
To suggest such common sense is a “warped view” is in itself a warped view. It is both naive and uninformed.
The US 2nd Amendment is as much part of the constitution as is the 1st Amendment or any other amendment and it is just as relevant today as it was two centuries ago. As the whole constitution shows, the Founding Fathers had vision and wisdom. Their intention was to protect the sovereignty of the nation state and its Christian civilisation. To those who are aware and informed, these values are as much under threat now as they have ever been. Letter-writer Mr Martin would not seem to qualify for membership of this category, and perhaps not for a gun licence either.
