Endless bloodshed is not the answer to Myanmar’s problems. The way forward is to build up a democratic federal union. Of course this is no easy task. Specific federal structures need to be clearly defined while the concrete mechanisms for power sharing as well as what the division of powers would look like in practice must be clarified. Much work on this project has been done in recent years with the Union Peace Conference (21st Century Panglong Conference) used as a way to reach agreement. However, creating trust and reaching a settlement will take time and effort.
