The evidence that God cannot exist

Agnostics and believers defend their position on two arguments.

The first is their claim that “something” can’t come from nothing. This is a wrong assumption. Acclaimed physicist Lawrence Krauss unpicks it in his mind-opening book “A universe from nothing”. Meanwhile Stephen Hawking, in his last statement before he died, told us that before the singularity caused the Big Bang, there was nothing!
The agnostics’/believers’ second argument states that there is no theory to explain the existence of intelligent life.
On the contrary, Douglas Hofstadter, an American professor of cognitive science, revealed just such a theory in his phenomenal book “Godel, Escher, Bach”, published 40 years ago.
Hofstadter shows how the ants in an anthill look intelligent and organised in the same way that neurones in a human brain do, though neither ants nor neurones are endowed with intelligence. This opens the possibility that, if constructions are complicated enough and layered enough, intelligence automatically will be present.
Nowadays sophisticated computers easily pass the Turing test for “human” intelligence. Computers made not by God but by human beings.
In 2002 a live polio virus was synthesised from nothing but chemicals and a genetic blueprint. In 2005 a larger influenza virus was synthesised, and nowadays far larger organisms can be manufactured in a lab from the building blocks of life, amino acids. We are only at the beginning of the revolution in genetics, which convinces me that we are on the brink of unravelling life’s secrets.
I leave it up for discussion whether this will be a boon or a disaster for humankind as we know it.
According to the Buddha, life is suffering – a description proven by observation of our world. I recall a picture of a toddler with a vulture in the background waiting for starvation so it could eat the baby. I remember children having their hands cut off by the rebels in Ivory Coast. Rape, torture, small children ripped from their parents to be put in cages, slavery, famine, babies dying from incurable diseases: it is not logical that a God creating life would allow this kind of suffering. (Please spare me the infantile comment that God’s ways are mysterious.)
My belief is strengthened by the atrocities committed by members of various religions through history, crimes carried out in the name of God. No other belief system has caused as much suffering as these religions.
Indeed, there will never be 100 per cent proof, but there is enough evidence to convince me that God cannot exist.
