Asean deserves no prizes, least of all a Nobel

Re: “Asean deserves the Nobel Peace Prize”, Have Your Say, yesterday

Not so fast. Now tell us what Asean has accomplished after 51 years, besides adding new members and the ridiculous hand holding.
Be concrete. Don’t rattle on with “Asean has already offered the model of the only truly multi-civilisational regional organisation in the world ... yak, yak, yak”. That doesn’t tell us anything. And don’t just say Asean is home to 630 million people and has combined GDP of US$2.6 trillion (Bt86.33 trillion). We know how to add.
Moreover, we are now in the third year of the AEC (Asean Economic Community) and what are the changes? None. All we get are words, words, words – no action. And what about the thorny issue of South China Sea? What is Asean’s stance? It seems the Asean summit is for the members to decide where the next summit is going to be.
Nobel Peace Prize? C’mon, Mr Ioan Voicu, give me a break!
