‘An auspicious year for Rakhine’

‘An auspicious year for Rakhine’

Re: “Myanmar’s president praises Rakhine state for ‘auspicious’ year”, The Nation, December 15.

Each and every day we read media reports of the accumulating lies of United States president Donald Trump, but these pale into insignificance when compared to the grotesque distortion of truth perpetrated by the president of Myanmar, Win Myint, as reported in The Nation.
Totally ignoring the reality of the barbarous behaviour of the Tatmadaw (Burmese military) in forcing more than 700,000 Rohingya to flee the country, including the murder of men, women and children, the rape of women, and the burning of villages and crops, Win Myint has the hide and temerity to congratulate the “ethnic brothers and sisters” of Rakhine on the 44th anniversary of Rakhine State Day.
More than 100,000 Rohingya who remain in Myanmar are living in appalling conditions, with their homes, livestock and farms confiscated, and with totally inadequate food and medical supplies.
Win Myint must have had his tongue firmly stuck in his cheek when he said, “With no natural disasters we can say that 2018 has been an auspicious year.” The Rohingya did not need any “natural disasters”. The criminal genocidal generals and their subservient troops provided all the disaster the Rohingya didn’t need.
It gets worse: Win Myint says that Rakhine is the site of planned economic zones, and that the government is working to provide 24-hour electricity to certain townships. If that is true, I am sure that the only beneficiaries will be Buddhist Burmese, who have now occupied the Rohingya farms and land, and expropriated their livestock.
Win Myint was appointed president by Aung San Suu Kyi, who was once affectionately called “The Lady”. By her silence and tacit consent to these atrocious lies, I think a more appropriate sobriquet would be “That Woman”.
