‘Democracy’ just leftovers from Prayut’s table
It was not unexpected that Prayut Chan-o-cha would be chosen as premier for a second term, but he shouldn’t be too enthusiastic considering that he won by a mere six votes, if you don’t take into account those he got from his 250 puppet senators.
During Wednesday’s debate, one senator claimed Prayut was a “democratic dictator”. This rhetoric reminds me of “chop suey” – a dish found in most Chinatowns in the US that’s made of leftovers. Similarly, the idea of a “democratic dictator” is nothing more than empty scraps of democracy.
This time Prayut will face a real test, since he can no longer turn to Article 44 but will have to rely on his coalition partners to push his agenda, while facing challenges from an equally strong opposition.
I wonder if Prayut’s government can survive more than six months.
