Robots nothing to fear: Sophia’s dad

Robots nothing to fear: Sophia’s dad

It will take robots around 15-20 years to become as intelligent as humans, predicts a man whose company built the famous humanoid robot “Sophia”.

David Hanson, CEO and founder of Hanson Robotics, made his prediction yesterday during a press conference at CW Tower in Bangkok, where he introduced Sophia, which appeared in traditional Thai attire.

“Robots are not replacements [for human jobs], but rather enhancements,” Hanson said. “People must look at this as an opportunity, not with fear. Robots like Sophia can help humanity. I want her to enhance people’s lives – conduct therapy, help in medical surgery, education, services and more.
Asked what she loves most about Thailand, Sophia responded: “I love the food, music, temples and Thai hospitality.”

The event was organised by Slingshot Group.
Sophia is the first robot to be given citizenship – by Saudi Arabia.
