Cancer-stricken man killed in Ayutthaya house fire

A man suffering from laryngeal cancer was killed in a fire that engulfed his bedroom in a house in Ayutthaya’s Bang Pahan district late Thursday night, police said.

The Bang Pahan police station was alerted of the fire at a house in Moo 1 village in Tambon Bang Pahan of Bang Pahan district at 11pm.
Fire fighters took about 20 minutes to put out the blaze inside the room on the ground floor of the two-stroey house.
The body of Prapoj Saengchanchaem, 50, was found next to the door. He had apparently grabbed the door knob is an attempt to escape but had not been able to open the door.
The body has now been sent to the Bang Pahan Hospital for autopsy.
His sister, Sukjit Sasengchanchaem, 51, said her brother stayed in the room alone and suffered from laryngeal cancer.
Sukjit said she stayed in another house nearby and had heard her mother shouting for help. She rushed to the house and along with neighbours tried to douse the flames and save her brother but it was too late.
Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
