Fire damages shophouses in Bangkok

A fire swept through four shophouses in Bangkok’s Bang Khae district early Tuesday. No one was injured, police said.

The Phetkasem police station was alerted of the fire at a row of two-storey shophouses on Soi Phetkasem 51 in Bang Khae Nua subdistrict at 2 am.
Fire engines took about half an hour to control the blaze after it damaged four shophouses, including a minimart and a cooking gas shop.
Thanyarat Immode, 35, said she and five workers were sleeping in one unit and that she was woken up by workers after a fire started in her unit’s ground floor.
They rushed outside before the fire spread to the minimart and the gas shop belonging to her relatives.
Workers told police they heard an explosion that sounded like a short circuit on the ground floor before the fire started.
Police have yet to investigate the cause of the blaze.
