Grand Theft Auto comes to life as game-addicted man steals two vehicles

A Nakhon Si Thammarat man reportedly suffering from mental health problems and addicted to the notorious Grand Theft Auto video game allegedly stole a motorcycle and a pickup truck in Bangkok late Tuesday night and early Wednesday, police said.

The suspect, identified only as Jo, agreed to disclose his whereabouts and waited for police to arrest him at 5am after friends and relatives called him.
He was arrested in the Bobae area and taken to Din Daeng police station where he is being held without charges pending questioning of his relatives and a check of his medical records.
Jo told police that he stole the two vehicles to imitate the much-criticized but popular GTA computer game in which players score by stealing vehicles.
Phayathai police learned about the thefts after being alerted by a delivery truck driver who reported that his pickup had been stolen from in front of the 7-Eleven shop near the Urupong Intersection on Phetchaburi road in Bangkok’s Ratchathewi district.
The pickup driver, Apinun Sroyjit, 61, told police that he had left the engine running while he was unloading a delivery to the convenience store and that someone had driven the vehicle away, leaving a motorcycle in its place.
Police later learned that the abandoned motorcycle had been reported stolen to the Din Daeng police station at midnight. The motorcycle belongs to Thanet Kanchanapermpholdee, 37, a taxi motorcyclist.
Thanet told police he went into a 7-Eleven shop on Soi Prachasongkroh 14, leaving the key in the ignition.
Police learned Jo’s identity from the footage of security cameras at the two conveniencd stores.
Police said Jo rode his motorcycle from Nakhon Si Thammrat to a relative’s house in Thon Buri before taking a taxi to visit friends on Soi Prachasongkroh 14 in Din Daeng where he stole the first vehicle.
