79 new Covid-19 patients, over two-thirds of local cases in Samut Sakhon

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Friday reported 79 new cases, 14 of whom were returnees in quarantine facilities and border crossers in the North.

Of the 22 exposed to the disease while visiting high-risk areas, 12 cases were in Samut Sakhon, six in Bangkok, three in Pathum Thani and one in Chonburi.

Meanwhile, proactive testing led to the discovery of 43 cases -- 38 in Samut Sakhon and five in Pathum Thani.

Of the overseas travellers found to be infected in quarantine facilities, ten Thais had returned from the United Arab Emirates, United States, Russia, Germany, Italy and Libya. A Romanian had travelled from Slovenia and a South African from his home country.

Two Thai women were arrested at the Thailand-Myanmar border for illegal entry on February 28 and March 2. Both tested positive on March 2 and were transferred for treatnent to Mae Sot Hospital.

Meanwhile, 79 patients have recovered and been discharged.

As of Friday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 26,241. Of these, 23,418 had been contracted locally, including 14,616 who were found via proactive testing, while 2,823 were returnees. So far, 25,641 have recovered and been discharged, 515 patients are still in hospitals, and 85 have died.

According to Worldometer, as of 10am on Friday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 116.22 million (up by 446,747), 91.88 million have recovered, 21.75 million are active cases (90,049 in severe condition) and 2.58 million have died (up by 9,955).

Thailand ranks 115th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 29.5 million, followed by India 11.17 million, Brazil 10.8 million, Russia 4.29 million and the United Kingdom 4.2.
