Mitsubishi Motors is targeting 10,000 Pajero sales across Thailand, Australia and Japan during the current fiscal year.
The diesel-powered SUV is due to enter the Thai market in mid-October before reaching Australia in early December.
“We invested everything we have, including our technology, in the new Pajero,” Mitsubishi Motors President Keisuke Kishiura said at the Tokyo unveiling on Wednesday (September 2).
He described the vehicle as the company’s “flagship model” and said it “embodies” Mitsubishi Motors.
Sales will later be extended to additional Southeast Asian countries, the Middle East and Latin America in the next fiscal year or beyond.
Mitsubishi Motors will introduce two smaller versions in the future and is also considering petrol and hybrid models.
“We’ll adopt an engine that suits the vehicle size,” Kishiura said.
The Pajero’s Japanese comeback is scheduled for December 17, seven years after Japanese-market production ended in 2019.
The company has set October 29 for the release of pricing and further information.
The nameplate traces its origins to 1982, when the first-generation model became a driving force in Japan’s SUV boom.
Before Wednesday’s unveiling, Mitsubishi Motors had not announced a new Pajero model since 2006.
