Thailand faces heavy rain as Typhoon Dolphin heads for Japan and China

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning at 5pm on Thursday (August 6, 2026).

It covers strong winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand, along with heavy to very heavy rain in parts of the country through Sunday (August 9).

The areas at risk are listed below.

Thursday (August 6)

Areas expected to be affected by very heavy rain:

• North: Chiang Rai, Phayao and Nan
• Northeast: Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom
• East: Chanthaburi and Trat

Areas expected to be affected by heavy rain:

• North: Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae, Tak, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun
• Northeast: Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani
• Central region: Lop Buri, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Nakhon Pathom
• East: Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri and Rayong
• South: Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket

Friday (August 7)

Areas expected to be affected by very heavy rain:

• East: Trat

Sunday (August 9)

Areas expected to be affected by heavy rain:

• North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Tak, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet and Phetchabun
• Northeast: Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Mukdahan, Nakhon Ratchasima and Ubon Ratchathani
• Central region: Kanchanaburi and Lop Buri
• East: Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi and Trat
• South: Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan

Rain is expected to increase across the North, Northeast and East, with heavy to very heavy falls in places.

Parts of the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, and the South are forecast to receive heavy rain.

This is due to a monsoon trough lying across the upper North and upper Northeast, combined with a strong south-westerly monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

The public should be alert to dangers from heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall, which may cause flash floods and run-off from forested areas, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and in low-lying areas.

Strong winds and waves are expected in the upper Andaman Sea, with waves 2–4 metres high and above 4 metres in thunderstorms.

The upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves 2–3 metres high and above 3 metres in thunderstorms.

Mariners in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should navigate with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms.

Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand should remain ashore from August 6 to 9.

Typhoon “Dolphin” over the Pacific Ocean is likely to move across Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, from August 6 to 7.

It is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang province, China, from August 9 to 10.

The storm will not move into Thailand.

Travellers heading to these areas are advised to check weather conditions before departure.

TMD also issued its forecast for Thailand from 6pm on Thursday (August 6) to 6pm on Friday (August 7).

North

Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae, Tak, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun, and very heavy rain in parts of Chiang Rai, Phayao and Nan.

• Minimum temperature: 23–27 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 31–37 degrees Celsius
• South-westerly winds: 10–20 km/h

Northeast

Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani, and very heavy rain in parts of Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom.

• Minimum temperature: 23–25 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 28–34 degrees Celsius
• South-westerly winds: 10–20 km/h

Central region

Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Lop Buri, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Nakhon Pathom.

• Minimum temperature: 23–26 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 34–37 degrees Celsius
• South-westerly winds: 10–25 km/h

East

Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri and Rayong, and very heavy rain in parts of Chanthaburi and Trat.

• Minimum temperature: 23–27 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 29–33 degrees Celsius
• South-westerly winds: 20–40 km/h
• Waves: 2–3 metres high and above 3 metres in thunderstorms

South, east coast

Thunderstorms are forecast across 40% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Narathiwat.

• Minimum temperature: 23–26 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 32–35 degrees Celsius
• South-westerly winds: 20–35 km/h
• Waves: 1–2 metres high and above 2 metres offshore and in thunderstorms

South, west coast

Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket.

• Minimum temperature: 23–26 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 29–35 degrees Celsius
• From Phuket northwards: south-westerly winds of 20–40 km/h, with waves 2–3 metres high and above 3 metres in thunderstorms
• From Krabi southwards: south-westerly winds of 15–35 km/h, with waves 1–2 metres high and above 2 metres in thunderstorms

Bangkok and surrounding provinces

Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the area, with heavy rain in places.

• Minimum temperature: 25–27 degrees Celsius
• Maximum temperature: 32–35 degrees Celsius
• South-westerly winds: 10–25 km/h
