Heavy rain and rough seas forecast in parts of Thailand
Heavy rain is forecast in the North, East and western South on August 28, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms in Greater Bangkok
Thailand will experience scattered thunderstorms on Friday (August 28), with isolated heavy rain forecast in the North, East and along the southern west coast, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).
Residents in affected areas have been advised to remain alert to hazards caused by heavy and accumulated rainfall.
A rather strong south-westerly monsoon is prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Meanwhile, a monsoon trough extends across Myanmar and upper Laos towards a low-pressure area over upper Vietnam.
The conditions are expected to intensify, with heavier rainfall forecast for parts of upper Thailand from August 29 to September 2.
Marine warning
Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are forecast to reach two to three metres and exceed three metres during thunderstorms.
The upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves of about two metres, rising above two metres in stormy areas.
Mariners in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should proceed with caution and avoid areas affected by thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore.
Regional forecast
The forecast covers the period from 6am on Friday to 6am on Saturday (August 29).
North: Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with isolated heavy rain in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 23–27°C to 32–36°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–20km/h.
Northeast: Thunderstorms are expected across 40% of the region, mainly in Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 24–26°C to 32–35°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–25km/h.
Central region: Thunderstorms are forecast across 40% of the area, mainly in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi. Temperatures will range from 23–26°C to 34–36°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–25km/h.
East: Thunderstorms are expected across 60% of the region, with isolated heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Chanthaburi and Trat. Temperatures will range from 24–28°C to 30–34°C, with south-westerly winds of 20–35km/h. Waves will be about two metres and exceed two metres during thunderstorms.
Southern east coast: Thunderstorms are forecast across 40% of the region, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Yala and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 23–26°C to 32–36°C.
From Surat Thani northwards, south-westerly winds will reach 20–35km/h. Waves will be one to two metres, about two metres offshore and above two metres during thunderstorms.
From Nakhon Si Thammarat southwards, south-westerly winds will reach 15–35km/h. Waves will be about one metre, rising to one to two metres offshore and above two metres during thunderstorms.
Southern west coast: Thunderstorms are forecast across 30% of the region, with isolated heavy rain in Ranong and Phang Nga. Temperatures will range from 23–26°C to 31–35°C.
- From Phuket northwards, south-westerly winds will reach 20–40km/h. Waves will be two to three metres and exceed three metres during thunderstorms.
- From Krabi southwards, south-westerly winds will reach 15–35km/h. Waves will be one to two metres and exceed two metres during thunderstorms.
Bangkok and surrounding provinces: Thunderstorms are forecast across 40% of the area. Temperatures will range from 27–28°C to 33–35°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–25km/h.
