TMD urges travel caution on flood-prone routes across upper Thailand

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warned at 5pm on September 2 of isolated heavy to very heavy rain in upper Thailand from September 4 to 7, particularly in the North and Northeast.

The conditions are being driven by a monsoon trough across the North and upper Northeast and a moderate southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

People in affected areas should remain alert to the dangers of heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall, which could cause flash floods and forest run-off, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and in low-lying locations.

They should avoid travelling along routes prone to recurring floods, especially low-lying roads where temporary flooding may occur.

Tropical Storm Saudel over the upper South China Sea is forecast to move closer to the southern coast of China from September 3 to 4 and is likely to weaken.

Those planning to travel to the area should check weather conditions before departure.

The storm will not enter Thailand.

The department urged the public to plan daily activities and travel carefully during the period to improve safety and reduce possible impacts.

• Waves: 1–2 metres, rising above 2 metres during thunderstorms

Southern region, east coast

• Rain: Thunderstorms across 40% of the region, mainly in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala and Narathiwat
• Temperatures: Minimum 22–26°C; maximum 32–36°C
• Wind: Southwesterly at 15–35 km/h
• Waves: About 1 metre and 1–2 metres offshore, rising above 2 metres during thunderstorms

Southern region, west coast

• Rain: Thunderstorms across 60% of the region
• Heavy rain: Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun
• Temperatures: Minimum 23–25°C; maximum 32–34°C
• From Phuket northwards: Southwesterly winds at 20–35 km/h, with waves about 2 metres and above 2 metres during thunderstorms
• From Krabi southwards: Southwesterly winds at 15–35 km/h, with waves 1–2 metres and above 2 metres during thunderstorms
