TMD reports magnitude 6.2 Indonesia quake at 4.23am on September 12

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reported a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in Indonesia’s Java region on Saturday (September 12, 2026), saying the event had no impact on Thailand.

The earthquake occurred at 4.23am Thai time, according to the department’s Earthquake Observation Division. The TMD located the epicentre at 5.11 degrees south and 106.90 degrees east, with a depth of 371km.

The TMD published those findings in Bulletin No. 1/2026, issued at 4.36am on September 12. 

Shaking estimates differ between Thai and US agencies

The TMD bulletin projected maximum intensity of VIII–IX on the Mercalli scale near the epicentre. The department’s assessment described shaking that most people could feel clearly, with the possibility of severe damage to buildings and partial collapses.

The Thai bulletin presented those effects as a forecast. It did not document confirmed building damage or collapses.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) separately recorded the Java-region earthquake at magnitude 6.6 and a depth of approximately 358.6km. An automatic USGS ShakeMap estimated maximum Modified Mercalli intensity at about 3.6, substantially below the Thai bulletin’s projection.

Java quake falls outside Thai alert criteria

The TMD said the earthquake’s magnitude and epicentre did not meet the conditions for notification through Thailand’s Cell Broadcast earthquake alert system.

The Thai department said it would promptly release further details if additional information became available.
