Nine suspected drug smugglers killed, 272kg of meth seized in Chiang Rai shootout

Thailand’s Thap Chao Tak Task Force reported on September 29, 2026, that nine suspected drug smugglers had been killed in a clash with soldiers in Chiang Rai’s Mae Fah Luang district. Troops recovered about 272 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine after the September 28 gunfight.
Army reports gunfire during Mae Fah Luang border patrol
The Thap Chao Tak Task Force said soldiers encountered around 15–17 people carrying sacks adapted as rucksacks at 8.10pm on September 28 on an informal border route near Ban Pang Mahan, Moo 8, in Thoet Thai subdistrict. According to the military, members of the group opened fire after the troops identified themselves and asked to search them.
Two operational teams from the Thap Chao Tak Task Force’s 1st Cavalry Company were working with a special intelligence team on surveillance along the Mae Fah Luang border. The operation was intended to prevent and intercept offences under the Narcotics Code.
Thai troops returned fire in self-defence during the Mae Fah Luang confrontation, the Thap Chao Tak Task Force said, adding that the type and calibre of the opposing group’s firearms were unknown.
The Mae Fah Luang gunfight lasted about 10 minutes before members of the group escaped under cover of darkness, the Thap Chao Tak Task Force said. All military personnel were unharmed, and three additional operational teams secured the scene throughout the night.
Morning search finds nine bodies and 16 drug sacks in Mae Fah Luang
Soldiers searched the Mae Fah Luang clash site and surrounding area at 6.45am on September 29, finding the bodies of nine men and 16 sacks converted into rucksacks, according to the Thap Chao Tak Task Force.
Each of the 16 sacks recovered in Mae Fah Luang contained about 17kg of crystal methamphetamine, known as ice, giving a combined weight of approximately 272kg, the Thap Chao Tak Task Force said. The military identified the substance as a Category 1 narcotic.
The Thap Chao Tak Task Force said officials had seized the drugs and collected evidence at the clash site. Officials will expand the investigation to trace other suspected members of the trafficking network for prosecution.
