Five days of heavy rain put Thailand on alert from Oct 9

Bangkok faces heavy rain risks on October 10–11, while southern Thailand remains under warning through October 13, with flash floods possible.

  • Thailand's meteorological department has issued a five-day alert for heavy to very heavy rain across parts of the country from October 9 to 13.
  • The warning affects different regions on different days, with Bangkok expecting heavy rain on October 10-11 and the South being impacted for the entire five-day period.
  • Authorities have warned of potential flash floods, sudden run-off, thundershowers, and gusty winds, particularly in low-lying areas and near waterways.
  • Mariners are also advised to be cautious, as waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand could exceed two meters during thundershowers.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued Warning No. 5 at 5am Thai time today (October 9, 2026), forecasting isolated heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Thailand during October 9–13. Thundershowers, gusty winds and hail are also expected during the five-day period.

The TMD’s latest advisory, reference 251/2026, places the eastern part of the Northeast, the East and the South under warning for October 9, with the affected areas changing over the following days.

Bangkok faces heavy rain risks on October 10–11

Bangkok and surrounding areas are included in the TMD warning for October 10–11, while the South remains covered throughout October 9–13. The regional schedule is:

- October 9: The eastern part of the Northeast, the East and the South.
- October 10: The lower North, lower Northeast, Central region including Bangkok and surrounding areas, the East and the South.
- October 11: The lower North, Central region including Bangkok and surrounding areas, the East and the South.
- October 12: The South.
- October 13: The South.

TMD warns of flash floods and sudden run-off

Heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods and sudden run-off, particularly on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas, the TMD warned. Low-lying locations could also experience standing floodwater.
The TMD advised people to stay alert to thundershowers and gusty winds and avoid open spaces, sheltering beneath large trees or standing near unstable billboards.

The TMD attributed the unsettled conditions late in the rainy season to a high-pressure system, or cool air mass, extending from China over upper Thailand. A monsoon trough is expected to lie across the upper South, while the southwest monsoon continues to prevail over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Waves could exceed two metres in Andaman Sea and Gulf

Waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand could rise above two metres in areas affected by thundershowers, according to the TMD. Mariners should check their routes, navigate cautiously and avoid sailing through thundershowers.

The TMD urged residents to plan daily activities and travel carefully during October 9–13 to reduce risks and follow further announcements. Weather information is available around the clock through the TMD website or by calling 02-399-4012, 02-399-4013 or 1182.

The TMD’s next advisory is scheduled for 5pm Thai time on October 9.
