Khao Banthat closes five nature trails over monsoon flood risk

Khao Banthat Wildlife Sanctuary has temporarily closed five nature trails in southern Thailand as heavy rain raises the threat of flash floods and landslides.

Khao Banthat Wildlife Sanctuary has temporarily closed five nature trails from Monday (October 19) because of heavy monsoon rain and the risk of flash floods, landslides and rapid forest runoff.

The sanctuary, which covers areas of Phatthalung, Trang, Satun and Songkhla provinces, said the measure was intended to protect visitors and staff, strengthen safety procedures and give local ecosystems time to recover.

Sanctuary chief Thanasan Chantharachot said October and November fall within the annual rainy season in southern Thailand, when frequent heavy rainfall can trigger flash floods, mudslides and sudden runoff from forested areas.

Much of the sanctuary’s trekking network runs through steep mountain terrain and crosses streams and waterways. Continuing to allow visitors onto the routes during unstable weather could therefore pose serious risks to the lives and property of both tourists and officials, he said.

Officials will use the closure period to review and improve safety measures and brief tour operators and guides on operating procedures and regulations to ensure consistent standards.

The temporary suspension is also expected to reduce disturbance in the affected areas, allowing wildlife and natural habitats to recover.

The five closed routes are Khao Chet Yot, Khao Lon–Lan Hin Ai Un, Khao Lon Nom Sao, Khao Lak and Ban Tra.

The closure will remain in effect until weather conditions return to normal and the sanctuary issues an official notice changing the order.

The sanctuary has asked tourists and members of the public to comply strictly with the closure and follow its official public-relations channels for further updates.
