Thailand monitors Typhoon Champi as Taiwan travellers warned

Thai weather authorities say Typhoon Champi is not expected to enter Thailand directly, while travellers to Taiwan from October 21-24 are advised to monitor forecasts.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) is monitoring Typhoon Champi and has advised travellers heading to Taiwan from October 21 to 24 to closely follow weather and flight updates as the storm approaches the island.

The department said on Tuesday (October 20) that the typhoon could affect weather conditions and travel in Taiwan during the period. Travellers were advised to check forecasts before departure, follow official warnings and confirm flight status with their airlines.

The TMD cautioned that both the track and intensity of the typhoon could change.

For Thailand, however, the department said the storm’s current forecast track showed no indication that it would move directly into the country.

It also stressed that rainfall affecting several parts of Thailand at present was not being caused directly by Typhoon Champi.

Instead, the rain was linked to the monsoon trough and prevailing winds over Thailand, which continue to bring rainfall to several areas.

The storm assessment was based on satellite imagery recorded at 7.50am on Tuesday.

The TMD advised members of the public and people planning to travel to continue checking its latest announcements and airline information so they can adjust their travel plans if conditions change.
