Uganda mourns King Oyo Nyimba, once world's youngest monarch
King Oyo Nyimba of Uganda’s Tooro kingdom, once the world’s youngest reigning monarch after taking the throne aged three, has died at 34.

Uganda is mourning King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional monarch of Tooro who once held the distinction of being the world’s youngest reigning king, following his death at the age of 34.
Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, prime minister of the Tooro kingdom, announced the monarch’s death in a post on X late on Thursday. He reported that King Oyo died at about 10pm local time, although the cause of death was not disclosed.
Shortly before the announcement, Balaam Barugahara, a minister in the government of President Yoweri Museveni, revealed that the king had been receiving medical treatment in the United States.
King Oyo ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, when he was just three years old, following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His accession made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time.
Although Uganda is a republic headed by an elected president, several traditional kingdoms dating back to the pre-colonial era remain part of the country’s social and cultural landscape.
Their rulers exercise little formal political authority under Uganda’s present system of government, but continue to command considerable cultural and social influence among their communities.
The Tooro kingdom lies in western Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. King Oyo served as its traditional monarch for more than 30 years.
Rwomiire noted that although King Oyo was unmarried, he had left an heir, assuring the public that “continuity of the Crown is assured”.
News of the king’s death prompted widespread mourning across Uganda, with members of the public and prominent figures posting condolences on social media as national media outlets gave extensive coverage to his passing.
In a message marking King Oyo’s birthday in April, Rwomiire described him as a monarch closely connected to the everyday realities of his people and the experiences of his generation.
He portrayed the king’s youth not as a limitation but as a source of energy, fresh perspectives and the confidence to envisage a different future for the Tooro kingdom.
