Oriental Land plans to invest about 330 billion yen in construction and related costs, with two- to four-night Tokyo voyages aimed at family entertainment.

  • Oriental Land Co. is launching Japan's first Disney cruise ship, the "Disney Imagination," with services scheduled to start in spring 2029.
  • The ship's core concept is to establish a new culture of family entertainment cruises, with experiences designed for all ages, from children to the elderly.
  • Initial plans involve two- to four-night sailings originating from Tokyo, with the vessel having a capacity for around 4,000 passengers.
  • The project is a 330 billion yen investment by the Tokyo Disney Resort operator to create a new major revenue source alongside its theme parks.

Oriental Land Co. plans to put about 330 billion yen into building Japan’s first Disney cruise ship and covering related costs, with luxury cruising intended to become another major revenue source alongside its theme parks.

The Tokyo Disney Resort operator announced on Wednesday (October 14) that the ship would carry the name Disney Imagination.

Services are scheduled to start in spring 2029, and bookings are to open around six months before the launch.

Entertainment for all generations is central to the company’s ambition.

At a press conference, Oriental Land chairperson and chief executive Yumiko Takano explained: “We will establish a new culture of family entertainment cruises where everyone, from children to the elderly, can take center stage.”

Standard guest rooms are to be priced from around 100,000 yen to below 400,000 yen per person.

The company’s initial plan centres on two- to four-night sailings that begin and end in Tokyo.

Accommodation for up to around 4,000 passengers is planned across 1,250 guest rooms.

The vessel is to measure about 340 metres in length and weigh around 140,000 tons.

Ryotaro Shiiba, president of the ship’s operator, Oriental Land Cruise Co., linked the project to the development of Japan’s cruise market.

“It is important to put the ship into service under the Japanese flag to contribute to the market’s development,” he explained.

“The Japanese cruise market has sufficient potential.”
