WHETHER YOU’RE after a hearty breakfast of beef massaman curry or a late night snack of Eggs Benedict, the Coffee Club is always ready to serve your favourite meal at any time of day.
Since opening its doors in Australia in 1989, the Coffee Club has become the country’s largest domestic cafe group with approximately 400 stores in nine countries including New Zealand, Egypt, Malaysia and Maldives. Under Minor Food Group, the chain opened its first outlet in Thailand six years ago and has now expanded to 27 branches in Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Samui, Pattaya and Chiang Mai.

The Coffee Club’s latest branch in Bangkok is right next to the US Embassy.

The latest outlet is at the 208 Building on Wireless Road and boasts glass walls that look towards the lush landscaped gardens of the American ambassador to Thailand right next door. In addition to the aromatic coffee for which it is known, the 70-seat cafe serves everything from all-day breakfasts and brunches, sandwiches and pastas, to salads and grills, Thai delicacies and sweet treats. WiFi is free, making it a tempting place to linger and work.

Eggs Benedict

The extensive menu under the baton of James Bradbury incorporates Eastern and Western ideas inspired by the chef’s extensive travel and his specials are slated to change every four months. Although in Australia, the Big Breakfast (Bt395) featuring chipolata sausage, bacon, egg, mushroom, toast, hashbrowns and your choice of coffee or orange juice is a big hit, Eggs Benedict are more popular here. The dish offers toasted ciabatta bread topped with poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and your choice of ham, bacon and smoked salmon for Bt280 to Bt310.

If Western-style breakfast is not your thing, you can start your day with Congee (Bt190) blended with shiitake mushroom, minced pork, ginger and onsen egg or Khao Tom (boiled rice soup) with your choice of chicken, pork or prawn for Bt140 to Bt160. Another option is the Middle-East style dish Shakshuka (Bt240) that works well for brunch and dinner. It’s a dish of baked eggs poached in a sauce of tomato, chorizo, rocket leaves and feta cheese and is served with freshly baked ciabatta.

For a lighter meal, the classic Caesar Salad (Bt260) features cos lettuce, bacon, croutons and parmesan cheese tossed with the house’s Caesar dressing then finished with a warm poached egg and anchovies. A Thai palate pleaser is the refreshing Watermelon Salad (Bt250) that’s made with prawns and dressed with feta cheese crumbs. Chopped red chilli is served on the side and it’s truly fiery.

Meat eaters will enjoy the signature Fat Boy Angus Burger (Bt400), a sturdy 150-gram New Zealand Angus beef patty with triple cheddar cheese, double crispy bacon, rocket leaves and mustard mayonnaise on house-made soft buns. Another all-day favourite is Chicken Schnitzel (Bt340), which combines crispy chicken breast with fennel, radishes, peas, rocket, parmesan and Italian slaw.

Among the Thai delicacies is Beef Massaman Curry (Bt590), made with 160 grams of Australian beef cooked to your liking, a tasty curry sauce, potatoes and cashew nuts. It’s served with steamed jasmine rice. Thai comfort food khao pad kra pao (rice with Thai basil) is worth ordering just for the presentation with the pork chop dressed with spicy Thai basil sauce and crisp basil leaves and served with steamed jasmine rice.

Three deconstructed desserts are well worth the 15 to 20 minutes they take to prepare. A combination of sweet and tangy, the Passion is a perfect choice with mango passion fruit tart and coconut panna cotta spiked with mango passion sherbet. Chocolate lovers will be delighted with the Mocha Assiette boasting double chocolate espresso cheesecake, choc espresso brulee and mocha creme with dark chocolate ice cream. Another temping choice is Red Velvet with red velvet cake, strawberry yoghurt parfait and raspberry lychee ice cream. Each costs Bt230.
