The Cabinet on Tuesday approved in principle two moves to attract “high-potential” foreigners to Thailand by offering them residency visas. High-potential foreigners consist of four groups: wealthy global citizens, wealthy retirees, people who want to work from Thailand, and high-skilled professionals.

The Cabinet on Tuesday agreed to allow hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar to register for legal employment, as part of Covid-19 control measures.

Foreign specialists and investors in 10 targeted industries who have four-year “smart visas” will not need work permits to have secondary jobs in Thailand.

Residents of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao will no longer need work permits when they are hired by enterprises on the Chinese mainland, meaning they will be treated the same as local residents.

Thais rounded up in Germany’s biggest crackdown on crime rings, which are suspected of smuggling hundreds of women and transsexuals from Thailand for prostitution, were likely to be charged first with working as prostitutes without work permit.

MORE THAN 950,000 migrant workers have yet to register with the Labour Ministry, with only one week left in the deadline to legally apply for a work permit.
