BOT meet on 'rising asia'

The Bank of Thailand will hold its annual symposium under the theme "Keep Pace with Rising Asia" from October 20-21.

The BOT Symposium 2011 recognises that the evolving global environment requires rethinking Asia's importance in the world economy and its impact on the Thai economy. This will enable the country to face oncoming challenges and secure its economic standing in the world, said Roong Mallikamas, director of the central bank's Economic Research Department.

The symposium at Centara Grand Bangkok will be divided into two parts. The first part comprises five presentations on key research papers, starting off with an assessment of Asia's potential as a driver of global growth.

The issue of whether China can continue to be a growth leader will also be tackled.

Also addressed is the question of whether the Asean Economic Community will raise the region's economic potential, dramatically changing the face of Asia by 2015.

As well, it will look at how this country can keep pace with the rest of Asia in light of the various structural changes that the Thai economy needs to undertake.

Of particular importance is how Thailand can manage infrastructure investment to support growth in an environment characterised by the free flow of production and increasing challenges to businesses.
