JICA proposes flood-prevention financing

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has offered Thailand assistance to develop a pilot flood-prevention system for industrial estates.

Industry Minister Wannarat Charnnukul said today that JICA promised the investment under a budget of 500 million or about Bt120 million.
Wannarat said the ministry would discuss with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), in selecting one industrial estate for such pilot project.
It will be one of seven inundated industrial estates - Saha Rattana Nakorn, Hi-Tech, Bangpa-in, Nava Nakorn, Factory Land, Rojana, and Bangkadi.
A JICA delegation led by its vice president Arai Izumi proposed the assistance to Wannarat during a meeting yesterday.
They discussed proper infrastructure to prevent a similar disaster. The Thai government promised a soft loan package to finance the system, amid fears that foreign investors will flee Thailand following the worst flood disaster in nearly 70 years.
