HK tour firms launch post-flood campaigns

Hong Kong tour operators unveiled cheap packages to Thailand yesterday in a bid to persuade tourists to return to these flood-hit shores.

The deals were being offered in anticipation of the lifting of the Hong Kong government’s month-long travel advisory against travel to Bangkok because of the flooding and its aftermath.
They include five-day, “buy two, get one free” deals priced at about 1,600 Hong Kong dollars (Bt6,420) per person, including flights to Bangkok or Pattaya and rooms.
The advisory, which recommends against all non-essential travel, was imposed as flood waters threatened the capital.
It has led to the cancellation of about 150 tours involving more than 3,000 people from Hong Kong, an important short-haul market for Thailand.
The flooding first hit northern Thailand in July. It has inundated the northern, eastern and western outskirts of Bangkok since October, but flood barriers have kept the central parts of the capital dry. The slowly moving flood waters were not expected to recede until the new year.
Hong Thai Travel Service is one of several companies offering cheap packages jointly with Thai Airways, which has launched a campaign called “Thailand, Fly Again”.
The bargain deals will be offered to the first 800 people who book tours to Bangkok or Pattaya from December 1-15.
Another company, Wing On Travel, is offering a “buy one, get the second at half-price” deal.
