Fly on Corporate Wall

It was certainly no fun for chairwoman Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul watching Toshiba Thailand engulfed in flood waters at the Bangkadi Industrial Estate. This was the company her late mother Thanphuying Niramol built, though, so Kobkarn is determined to fight

It was emotionally devastating, she tells Lips magazine. She was terribly upset that she couldn’t save the estate. “I couldn’t protect what my parents had created.”
Niramol had little problem holding off the great flood of 1995, she recalls, and was quite proud of the achievement. “She told us that when she passed away she would love to have a statue erected, showing her standing on sandbags with a mobile phone in her hand. She said it would remind everyone about duty and responsibility.”
And that’s why Kobkarn is including a “Dr Korn-Thanpuying Niramol Suriyasat Memorial” in her post-flood rehabilitation plans, along with four prototype water barriers. Everyone, not just the government, shares blame the 2011 flood debacle, she says.
“We must ask ourselves: ‘Did we build houses that obstruct waterways? Did we destroy forests? Do we always throw garbage in the canals?’” It’s time for Thais to live more environment-friendly lifestyles, Kobkarn says.
At the same time, she adds, the government must ensure flood protection is part of its “New Thailand” scheme. “All we ask is simply never to become victims again.”

Tea and totes
Twinings had a party recently to open its new tea garden at the Nine mall on Rama IX Road and, somewhat surprisingly, it felt like a fashion show.
There was tea, yes, and lovely pastry, but clothing designer Wannaporn “Duang” Posayanonda vacuumed up the attention with a parade of models toting the Rouge Rouge handbags she made with Britain’s Mark Ketteringham, who works with Erickson Beamon and Givenchy.
It was a great show and had its own “England-tea” linkage, but guests could only wonder whether Twinings was paying Duang a fee for the entertainment or Duang was financing the Twinings tea garden.
