What I also don’t understand is that many of my colleagues are younger than me, less qualified and come from less fortunate families than me. So I should be having finer qualities than them but I don’t. They are expressive at meetings and they mix around more easily as well. On the other hand, I remain a recluse with few people whom I can go for lunch with and am quiet at meetings where I hold back even when I want to give my views. What is it that is in me that others do not have? I want to make a change to this, but I need to know where to start.

It is really about your self-esteem. In its simplest term, it is the value you put on your self-worth as compared to others. When you see others having more value, capabilities and rights, etc than you, there is a high chance that your self-esteem is low. People who have high self-esteem do just the opposite for they see that they have as much as the other person. However, be clear that this is not about being arrogant as you are not thinking that you are bigger than others, just their equal, that’s all.
The Bottom Line: You need to change your opinion about yourself. There may be many things in the past years of your life that are still haunting you and you either cannot forget them or you have not come to terms with them. It could be about certain events that took place, or certain people who had a bearing in your early life. All these have influenced the way you now feel and think about yourself. Your other colleagues probably have lesser of them or have learned to say “forget it” and move on with their lives. So here is where you need to work on; change your belief system and you will change the way you feel about yourself.
Powerful Questions: What do you say about yourself? What were the past events and people, etc who have an impact on the way you feel? How are they helping you move forward, or move backward? What can you do to make yourself equal to all?
