NBTC probes DTAC breakdown

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has appointed a fact-finding committee to probe a disruption in Total Access Communication network yesterday morning.

The NBTC called in DTAC representatives to explain the incident yesterday evening.
According to DTAC, both its main fibre-optic line in the upper North region and a back-up line failed yesterday, disrupting communication services to many subscribers in the area. The company finished repairing both fibre-optic lines at 1pm yesterday, and normal service was restored. DTAC has about 1.5 million subscribers in the upper North.
The main fibre-optic line in the area was found to have been cut by a truck accident. DTAC was investigating the cause of the back-up line’s failure.
The company said it would send text messages to affected customers yesterday to tell them how they will be compensated.
DTAC is strengthening its back-up system by installing third fibre-optic lines in the North, Northeast and South. Installation is expected to be complete in the next three months.
