Sittichai Theppaitoon, managing director of game developer Gameindy, said OMGServer is a campaign designed to enable game developers to improve their time to market to three or four months from the usual one year.
The firm expects around 10 software game companies will participate in the project, which is aimed at developing games that will be playable on both PCs and smart devices. The company will offer a supporting investment fund of Bt500,000 per game to participating developers to commercialise their games.
Three games are currently in development under the project: a dummy game, a card game and a racing game. The firm expects another seven game developers will be participating by the end of this year. Gameindy has already made the dummy game available via Facebook. It plans to use the “freemium” model to generate revenue, which will be shared by the developers, online distributors and Gameindy.
Freemium is a business model by which a product or service is provided free of charge, but money is charged for advanced features, functionality or virtual goods.
“I think the game market in Thailand has huge potential. There is room to enter the market, which is now worth more that Bt4.6 billion a year,” Sittichai said.
He added that the firm expects to see revenue of Bt30 million by the end of this year, with four online games available.
It expects revenue of Bt60 million next year from around 13 online games.
Gameindy’s major shareholder, Vichai Bencharongkul, said that online games have high growth potential in Thailand. The extensive smart-device and network infrastructure in the country is a factor driving growth in the game industry, he said, as game-lovers can play online games anytime, anywhere.
