GMM Z hopes to sell another million set-top boxes in 2014

Despite the huge challenges in the broadcasting industry posed by the birth of digital terrestrial TV next year, GMM Z Trading, the satellite-platform business of GMM Grammy, plans to sell a million set-top boxes next year on top of the 2.3 million boxes

Chief operating officer Fahmai Damrongchaitham reaffirmed yesterday that the company’s focus was to strengthen its GMM Z satellite-TV platform.
The company is on track to achieve its sales target for set-top boxes this year.
“The key driver was the great exclusive content that was available via the box both for free and pay-per-view,” he said.
Buyers of the device can watch at no charge more than 200 free-to-air satellite TV channels and 14 exclusive channels from GMM Grammy.
They can also pay monthly for packages of entertainment, sports and documentary channels.
The Bt199 Gold package comes with 15 pay channels and 200 free channels, while the Bt499 Platinum package provides 34 pay channels and 220 free channels.
The company has earmarked about Bt2 billion for newly produced content and foreign programmes.
It will also upgrade some channels to high definition, bringing the number of HD channels to 40 next year, up from 30 now.
The move is expected to help attract 600,000 pay-TV subscribers next year.
