GSB president takes full responsibility

Woravit Chalimpamontri, president of Government Savings Bank (GSB), on Tuesday tendered resignation amid continued withdrawals of deposits from the bank.

He told reporters that he had been considering this option in the past few days. Still, he insisted that the lending to Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) did not violate any law.
The resignation is to show his responsibility following the massive withdrawals of deposits in the past few days as well as to restore confidence among clients and employees, he said.
Woravit took the helm late 2012, succeeding Lersak Julates. There were three candidates then for the post.
Before joining the bank, he was the president of Government Housing Bank.
GSB has witnessed massive withdrawals of deposits since the management agreed to lend Bt20 billion to the BAAC, which seeks funds for the rice-pledging scheme.
Following the withdrawals of Bt30 billion on Monday, the situation remained the same on Tuesday. While some of the general public tried to deposit new money at the bank, hundreds of GSB employees today pressed for his resignation.
